Over the past 4 weeks of my summer placement, I (Juliette) have designed and built three twiddle boards for people with dementia, working with Lewis from MacDonald Project Solutions. The boards are designed to provide distraction and reduce anxiety when people are distressed by giving them familiar objects to interact with.

This mini-project gave us practical experience of using a combination of engineering techniques both new and traditional, from hand tools through to CAD, 3D printing and CNC profiling.

Twiddle board handover

Yesterday morning the boards were handed over to Tina Mitchell, the manager of Seaforth house care home in Golspie. We hope the boards will have a positive impact on the residents there.

With many thanks for the donations we received from McEwan of Inverness and IGUS, and support from our Nexus co-inhabitants Aseptium.
